Local man forced to quit job so he can work full-time on reading emails from his son’s school

CAREER SHIFT: A Sydney man has waved goodbye to his 13 year career in finance after becoming “completely overwhelmed” by a flood of emails from his son’s school.

“Reading all these messages has unfortunately become my full-time job,” Mark Ishan told DBT.

“The emails cover everything from the correct way to label my son’s lunchbox, information about school photos and constant reminders about the use of sunscreen.”

But Mr Ishan says it’s not just the emails which have crushed his work-life balance.

“There’s also the parents’ WhatsApp group chat which demands my constant attention,” he says.

“I’m currently wading my way through a 37-message debate over why the school canteen no longer offers organic free-range gluten-free cupcakes.”

“It’s like the Hunger Games of parental oversharing.”

Experts say Mark Ishan isn’t alone.

A growing number of parents across the country are stepping away from their careers to cope with the relentless demands of modern school communication.

“I’m considering hiring a personal assistant,” says another parent.

“But even if I do hire one, I’ll never be able to return to full-time work again.”
