Contacting the Police, Fire or Ambulance departments has become even easier in New South Wales.

The state government says those in emergency situations will now also be able to send text messages to triple zero.

“Even in the most dire situations, our research shows millennials are unwilling to engage in real time voice calls,” says Emergency Services Minister Peter Tivoli.

“Everyone needs to feel comfortable using triple zero.”

The minister acknowledges that texting is significantly less efficient than calling emergency services when reporting details of an incident.

“But young people simply refuse to call.” says Peter Tivoli. “Last week a young man texted emergency services after breaking his leg. Apparently he even used a crying face emoji.”

The new texting service went live this morning.
