Local couple now saving up for a deposit on a single tank of regular unleaded
DEBT FUELLED: A young Sydney couple have made the commitment to turn their dream of owning a full tank of petrol into a reality.
James and Sarah Matthews have announced they’re now actively saving for a deposit on a tank of regular unleaded from Caltex.
“We were saving for a house, but honestly, it’s starting to feel like a tank of petrol is more within our reach,” James Matthews told DBT.
“I hope we should be able to afford it by early 2028.”
Their dream is being made harder by the cost of living crisis and the escalating war in the middle east which has seen petrol prices soar to around $2.25 a litre.
“We are going to have to sacrifice a lot,” says Sarah Matthews.
“No vacations, no eating out, no drinking, and the most difficult one; no more avocado on toast.”
Their mortgage broker has suggested they consider a regional servo, where prices are marginally lower, though Dale noted the drive there would cost them what little fuel they have left.
