Growing calls to change the name of Sydney’s newest suburb from ‘Bays West’ to ‘Zetland by the Sea’

DOG BOX: An underwhelming response to the name of Sydney’s newest suburb ‘Bays West’ has developers and urban planners considering potential new names.

“‘Zetland By The Sea’ is emerging as an early favourite,” one developer told DBT.

“It’s a more honest reflection of the area’s coastal character, traffic bottlenecks and $2 million apartment starting price.”

The waterfront site near the Anzac Bridge is set to house thousands of residents in sleek new apartment towers and at least three different places selling $9 croissants.

Developers say the project will offer “unparalleled harbour-adjacent living,” despite early concept images showing higher living density than nearby Zetland.

Urban branding experts say the name change would help set realistic expectations.

“People hear ‘Bays West’ and think boats, breezes, maybe a bit of open space,” said one consultant.

“‘Zetland by the Sea’ tells you exactly what you’re getting.”
