FASHION IMPOSTER: The cost of living crisis was on show again today, as a shopper was caught out using a Kookai bag to disguise items she’d bought at Kmart minutes earlier.
A DBT reporter was on hand at Kmart to witness Kate Medhurst buy a $3.50 scented candle, a 5-pack of socks for $1.50 and an inflatable unicorn pool float for $10.
“At the self checkout, she quickly put the items in the Kookai carry bag and strolled confidently out of Kmart and into the shopping centre,” says our reporter.
“I followed her and asked her to show me the items inside the bag, but she ran away without making any comment.”
Consumer group Choice says the brazen act could potentially amount to misleading and deceptive conduct under Australian retail laws.
“This kind of activity is heavily frowned upon, especially in Sydney’s east,” says Choice.
The story has begun trending on social media, with many calling for Kate Medhurst to face charges.
“Surely the police should get involved here,” wrote one Twitter user.
Kookai has yet to release a statement on the scandal, but Kmart has seized the opportunity to capitalise on the free publicity.
“At Kmart, we encourage all shoppers to embrace their individuality and shop with pride, no matter which bag they choose to carry their purchases in,” says the discount retailer.
