Cycling advocates are calling for the race track at Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek to be narrowed to allow room for a bike lane.

“We applaud local government for the extensive bike track network around inner Sydney,” says cycling advocate Mike Harnett. “Now they should finish the job by giving cyclists a fair go at Eastern Creek.”

A group of more than 3400 cyclists from around the state have signed a petition, calling on the NSW government to allow a bike lane around the entire 4.5 kilometre track.

Roads minister Andrew Constance says he has an open mind.

“There are some obvious safety concerns, but we don’t see any reason why race car drivers can’t afford cyclists the same courtesies as other drivers do.”

The cycling advocates have submitted an artist’s impression of part of the track for review.

“We’re calling on the state government to do the right thing,” says Mike Harnett. “Car owners have had control of Sydney’s roads for too long.”

Sydney Motorsport Park management were unavailable for comment.
